I was raised in a family that could, and pretty much did, celebrate anything in some form or fashion.
Lost a tooth?
Tooth fairy dance.
Learned to ride your bike??
What's your favorite pie?
The yard is mowed.
Let's go swimming!
It's your birthday?
Party time!
And holidays? Get outta here!! I can still remember my mom changing drapes and bedspreads to match every season . . .
So it was only natural to expect the celebration traditions would carry over to our marriage. Problem was, Mike didn't grow up with the same traditions. So it was an adjustment for him.
I can still remember feeling confused and even shocked when his first birthday with me brought about his response of 'It's just another day.'
I mean, noooo - actually it's not. It's your BIRTH-DAY (Go Mikey! Go Mikey! It's your birthday! It's your birthday! :) I mean, how could a person's birthday be 'just another day?' So he was initiated with a SURPRISE party :)
But even after all these years - all of the birthdays, the attempts at 'surprising' him with gifts and parties, and so many birthdays and 'special' celebrations for the kids - he still tries his best to down-play today as 'just another day.'
Well, it's still not. Today is the ??th birthday of the man I fell absolutley head over heels in love with many moons ago. The man who is the best husband ever. My very best friend. The glue that holds us together. And the man who any child would be fortunate to call Dad (just ask ours).
So here it is honey . . . today is anything but just another day.
I love you!
